n. m. Grande pipe à tuyau souple, en usage au Moyen-Orient et au Maghreb, comportant un réservoir d'eau aromatisée à travers laquelle passe la fumée.

Pipe orientale dont la fumée après avoir traversé un vase rempli d'eau parfumée est aspirée par le fumeur au moyen d'un long tuyau flexible, parfois terminé par un bout d'ambre. Quand, ta main approchant de tes lèvres mi-closes Le tuyau de jasmin vêtu d'or effilé, Ta bouche, en aspirant le doux parfum des roses, Fait murmurer l'eau tiède au fond du narguilé (LAMART., À une jeune Arabe, 1834 ds Œuvres poét. compl., éd. M. F. Guyard, p.551). Nous nous assîmes sur les divans, et, tout en prenant du café et en fumant chacun un narguileh, nous causâmes, ainsi qu'il convient entre voyageurs (DU CAMP, Nil, 1854, p.147).
